The said Richard harris Meeting with him in the woods did desire him to make noe words
of it as he exspected to keepe a good conscience or words to that purpose Thomas Bradshaw
Memorandum that this 28th: day of October 1688 came before me the above menconed
Thomas Bradshaw & did make Oath to the above mentioned Writeing as Witness my
hand ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ James Round ~ ~ ~ ~
Mittimus
Sumrsett Ss ~ ffor as much as Richard harris & Susanna his wife was this present
day brought before me upon a Suspition of their Shortning the daies of a Negroe girle Called
Nan aged about 13 yeares who as slave to the said Richard harris dureing the Naturall
Life of his said wife by violent ill & barbarous usage it being reported aMong the Neighbors
That she was Stript naked teydd to the well post & first whipt & then burnt with Straw which
Upon examing of the Corps which was taken up by a Jury of enquest & the examining of some
Evidences with other good Circumstances appeares to be too true upon the examinacon of the
said Richard harris & his wife they both did confess the said Negroe to be burned on freyday last
Was a forthnight Since which time Many of the Neighbours did enquire of the said Susannah
Harris where the said Negroe girle was her answer was that She was gon abroade or She was in
being or the like alwaise Concealing her death
These are therefore in the Name of the Rtt: honoble: the Lord propry: to will & require you that presently
Upon Sight hereof you receive & take into Safe custody the said Richard harris & Susannah his wife
and them Safely to keepe untill they shall be thence delivered by due order of his Lordpps Lawes
whereof faile not Given under my hand & Seale this 28th: day of October anno 1688
To mr: ffrancis Jenckins high Sheriff of the County abovesd: James Round ~
Now here at this day to witt the Xiiith: day of November in the Xiiith: yeare of the Domion of
the right honoble: Charles &a annog Domi 1688 was brought to this barr Richard harris
and Susannah his wife and being demanded whether they were guilty of the fact laid to
Their charge or not guilty and for their Treyall put themselves put themselves upon God
& the Country (who being empannelled & Sworne vizt: Richard Chambers Arnold Elzey Wm:
Waller John ffossett Jno hust Samuell horsey Jno: Carter Robert Hall George Russell Henry
Morgan Tobyas Pepper John Painter John Paramore Richard Ackworth John holland
Charles Williams George Goddard & Thomas Wilson who after haveing hard the examinacon
of these following Evidences vizt:
Thomas Bradshaw Edward Shipham & Margrett Jenckins Sworne on behalfe of his Lopp
The said Jury being Elected Treyed & Sworne to Say the truth in the premisses doe Say
Wee of the Grand Jury doe find Richard Harris & Susannah his wife not guilty of
prsentment - -
Upon which it was ordered by the Justices of this Court that Richard harris & Susannah his
wife give Security as well for their good behaviour as for makeing the estate of the orphants
of the late Robert Ritcheson deced good to the said Orpants when required thereunto
Whereupon Came William Ritcheson & where William Browne and did owne themselves
in open Court to Stand indebted unto the Rtt: honoble: the Lord propry: in the just Sume of three
hundred pounds Sterl: apeice and the said Richard Harris in the sull Sume of Six hundred
pounds Sterl: wch: he likewise ownes in Open Court to stand indebted unto the aforesaid Lord
propry: to be Leavyed on their & either of theire goods & Chattles Lands & Tenaments -
for the use of the Lord propry: aforesaid
The Condicon of the Above recognizance being Such that is the above said Richard harris
& Susannah his wife Shall and will be of the good behaviour & abearrance towards all
his Lordpps good people within this province and that he will make good to the Orphants
of the late Robert Richeson deced all & Singular what of their estates was and is, in the
Custody of Susannah his wife & in his owne proper Custody when of them demanded or required
Then the above Obligacon to be void otherwise to Stand & remaine in full force & power
