from all her lower parts & Arm & her flesh appeared in some places blackish & Crispey as it is usuall for
flesh to looke when scoarched with fire & in many other places where the skin was off it appeard as red as
fire & the Skin laying loose in flacks in severall places where it was burnt & wee the said Jury before mentioned
Doe verily believe and are fully Satisfied in our Consiences that the death of the said Negro girle was hastened
by meanes of the said burning or Rosting Now this being the verdict of us the Jurors: before menconed in Testimony
whereof wee have hereunto sett our hands & seales this day and yeare Above menconed (James Round Coronr

Sumrsett Ss The deposition of Edward Shipham aged twenty four yeares or thereabouts who deposeth &
Saith that he being at worke at the house of Richard harris on Saturday the 20th: of this instant October
George Baynam being there enquired of Susanna harris wife of Richard harris where the Negroe girle
was this deponent made answer that he had not seen any Negro girle since he came there whereupon the
said Susanna harris made answer noe the Negroe girle was gon abroad before he came there to worke -
to the truth of which this deponent hath Subscribed this 29th: day of October 1688 Edwd: Shipham
Memorandum that the day above mentioned came before me the above mentioned Edwd Shipham
and did make oath to the above mentioned as Witnes my hand James Round
The deposition of Margrett Jenckins aged Twenty One yeares or thereabouts who deposeth & Saith Shee
Saw Richard harris bring the Negroe girle out of the field his wife being by him who help her husband
To tey her to the well post then the said Richard harris Calld to his boy Charles to bring the Switches
and the next which She Saw or heard was the blowes she being a spuning in the house she did likewise here
One of them Call to the little boy Richeson harris to bring some fire & this deponent saith she saw
The same boy carry some straw a small time after she saw the Negroe girle Standing by the well puting
mud upon her Leggs & her Arm all Raw her mistriss was Teying a Cloate about her waste & at the same time
She Saw a Smoake at the well post & further She saith that She Saw or heard the said Susanna harris
bid the Negroe girle goe into the house but the girle repleyed she was Soe hott & Sore that She Could not
Endure to be in the house but would rather Chuse to Ley in the water or Mud & this deponent saith
That the said Richard harris bid her empty his Kittle but She saith She could not then he bid her Sitt
downe for she Lay downe & about Two hours after she Saying She was not Able to goe they Carried
her into the Milk house & further she saith that she heard Susanna harris tell William Browne
that the said Negroe girle was in being or that She was gon abroad & further saith not to the truth
of all which this deponent hath Subscribed this 29th: day of October 1688 Margrett Jenckins
Memorandum that the day above Menconed came before me the above mentioned Margrett
Jenckins & did make Oath of the truth above menconed before me James Round
The deposition of Thomas Bradshaw aged Thirty five yeares or thereabouts who deposeth & Saith
that about Tuesday or Wednesday being the Second or Third day of this instant October he was At
Worke at the house of Richard harris & the Negroe girle useing to Ley out Sometimes of nights the said
Richard harris did desire the said Thomas Bradshaw when he came into breakefast that when he
Went out Againe that he should Lay a hold of the said girle when he went Out to the feild where
The girle was gathering of Beanes & to keepe her while he came to take her from him which accordingly
this depont: Saith he did whereupon the said Richard harris & his wife did imediatly appeare &
Tooke her from this depont: & led her away to the house whereupon this deponent went againe to
his Worke & a Small time after this deponent Saith he hard a Sad crey at the house & Saw a Smoake
he thereupon ran presently towards the house where he saw close by the yard the negroe girle Teyed
with three strands to the well post & afire burning by the said post upon his Coming up he saw both
Richard harris & his wife at the place & the said Richard harris did imediatly cutt the said three
Strands of the fishing lyne with which she was Teyed & let her goe & this deponent Saith that when
The girle went away he Saw that both Teighs & Leggs was much Scarrifeyed with fire whereupon
This deponent tould the said harris that he did not take him to have been such a man & that if he
had known he would have used her soe he would not have taken her if he would have given him
his plantation this deponent Saith he wrought at the plantacon eight or Nine daies after
but never had any Sight of her she being kept up in a Close Roome & upon his going away -
