DEVELOPMENTS AT PRINCESS ANNE 817

that he do — he and the other members of the Alumni Association —
everything within their power to assist in bringing this late afternoon
meeting about. We haven't reached him yet. We're trying to reach
him now.

I want to emphasize that this meeting is at my own initiative and
is brought about by a fervent hope that the attitudes at the College
have not crystallized to the point that we cannot, in a dispassionate
and objective fashion, discuss the problems that have caused the out-
break of the demonstrations there in the last few days.

Questions and Answers
Q. Are you ordering any increase in the peace force down there?

A. No, General Gelston is in control of the tactical situation along
with Colonel Lally and, of course, the Guard has not been ordered
into Somerset County. Colonel Lally is technically in charge of that

selected a different subject matter and the presentations were really
outstanding, I thought. We met for nearly an hour in the outside
room here.

Q. Governor, are there any State Police or National Guardsmen in
Princess Anne now?

A. I think there are State Police there but I'm not sure of the exact
number.

Mr. Thompson: Yes; they've been having some demonstrations there
yesterday or last night in the town of Princess Anne. The College is
outside.

Q. Governor, would you term this a Bowie State type of situation?

A. No, I wouldn't term it that at this stage because this demon-
stration was triggered by a non-college oriented incident more than
