NEWS CONFERENCE ON DEVELOPMENTS AT
PRINCESS ANNE

May 21, 1968

Governor: Gentlemen, about a half an hour ago we received word
from Princess Anne that some 200 students had held a two-hour rally
and had left the campus for a march through the town; after which,
as I understand it, they intend to fan out through the community.
The observers feared that the situation was getting a little bit tenuous,
that tempers were high, that sentiment was high and that trouble
could result.

When I heard this, while I was sitting at a Board of Public Works
meeting, I immediately recalled the very constructive meeting I had
held with certain members of the Alumni Association of Maryland
State College, and one of the student leaders, months ago. And it
seemed to me a most unfortunate situation to allow to occur without
some affirmative effort to stop it. So irrespective that there has been no
request for a meeting by any one from Maryland State — student or
faculty or official — I have decided to initiate a request for a meeting
sometime late this afternoon, here in Annapolis, between representa-
tives of the student body — up to ten representatives — and myself.

To get this word out I've requested General Gelston to contact Dr.
Ware, who is my representative on the scene. I've also spoken with
Dr. Williams, the president of the College, and he is attempting to
pass this information along. Now it's my very sincere hope that be-
cause of the past rapport between Maryland State and this administra-
tion, and the excellent and constructive meeting that resulted from a
request by the Alumni Association months ago, that we can resume
an orderly discussion of the problems and thereby avert any violence
or unfortunate explosion which would do no more than cause a tight-
ening of attitudes and a setback to the students, the faculty and the
State.

I am also attempting to reach Mr. Warren Morgan, who was a
member of that earlier meeting that I mentioned, with the request
