napolis in Annarundell County the nth day of March in the Eleaventh Year
of our Reigne Annoque Dni 1698/7 [sic]

MARYLAND ss. In the Records of the Provll Court amongst other things
therein it is thus Conteined.

William the third by the Grace of God of England Scottland France
and Ireland King Defender of the faith etc. [128] To the Sherriffe of Kent
County Greeting We Command you that You take John Salter late of Kent
County Inholder if he Shall be found in your Bayliwick and him Safe keep
So that You have his body before the Justices of our Provll Court to be held
att our Porte of Annapolis the 2d Tuesday in 9ber Next to Answer unto Clem-
ent Sale of a plea That he render unto him the full and Just Summe of or
Quantity of thirteen thousand four hundred Seaventy one pounds of every
Way well Conditioned Tobbacco in Cask which to him he Oweth and from
him unjustly deteineth hereof faile not att your perill And have you there
this Writt Wittness Robert Smith Esqr Chief Justice of our Said Court this
Tenth day of September in the tenth Year of (f Reigne Annoque Dni 1698

begun and held att the Porte of Annapolis the 8th day of November in the
Tenth Year of the reigne of King Willm the 3d of England etc. before his
Matys Justices thereunto Authorized and Appointed (Vizt)
The Honble Robert Smith Esqr President; Major John Hammond; Capt
Richd Hill; Capt Thomas Tasker; Mr Thomas Staley; Mr James Keetch;
Colo John Thompson.

Came the Said Sherriffe of Kent County and made returne of his Said
Writt in these Words Vizt Cepi per Edw Sweatnam Sherr

John Salter late of Kent County Inholder was Summoned to Answer
unto Clement Sale of a plea that he render unto him the full and Just Summe
or Quantity of Thirteen Thousand four hundred Seaventy one pounds of
every way well Conditioned Tobbacco in Cask which to him he Oweth and
from unjustly deteineth.

[129] And whereupon the Said Clement Sale by Robert Gouldsborough his
Attorney Saith That whereas the Said John Salter the 22th day of September
Annoque Dni 1697 att York Town in Talbott County by his Certein Bill or
Writing Obligatory Sealed with his Seale as his Act and Deed delivered and
hereinto Court brought whose Date is the Same day and Year, he bound
