"14 Nov. 1788—12 Nov. 1791" 39

In Council June 30TH. 1789

William Merrill of Worcester County by his Petition sets forth that he has been fined
the sum of Six pounds by the Court of the aforesaid County for selling spiritous Liquor
without Licence. He represents that the Offence was committed through ignorance of the
Law, and that he is a very poor man with a large family, and being entirely unable to pay
the fine, is in Custody of the Sheriff [p. 88], and three of the Justices of the
aforesaid County having certified the facts set forth to be true, and recommending him to the
Clemency of Government, The Board in Consideration of his poverty do order that the above
fine of six pounds be remitted.

Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to Hugh Birkhead Seven pounds current
Money for the like Sum paid into the Treasury for Caution on a Warrant obtained out of
the Land Office to affect lands lying within the reserves of the late Lord Proprietary in
Harford County as appears by the Warrant.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.

Ordered that no Sale be made of the property of Hoskins Hanson Esqr. and of his
