[p. 242] In Council June 5th. 1793

By a representation from the Chief and Associate Justices of the Court of Queens Anns
County, it appears that a certain Margaret Bateman has been fined by the said Court seven
hundred and fifty pounds of Tobacco tor keeping an Ordinary without licence. The Justices
aforesaid represent that the woman is exceedingly poor and has a number of small Children
who would have been a charge to the County but for her exertions. They therefore recommend
a remission of the fine, and the Board in consideration of her poverty do direct that upon her
paying all Costs, the fine imposed on her as aforesaid be remitted.
