Warrant, taken out in the name of Mary Cole per Warrant produced.

In Council May 12th. 1789

By the Petition of Benedict Sanders of Charles County and by a transcript of the Court
Record accompanying the Same, it appears that he has been fined the sum of twenty pounds
Current Money for assaulting and beating Smallwood Thompson a constable in the execution
of his duty—The Petitioner represents that he was led into the Offence by a prevailing opinion,
that a person might lawfully repel the attempt of an Officer to serve a process for Debt, after
having warned him to keep off at his Peril—He further represents that the said Smallwood
Thompson has commenced a civil action against him for Assault and Battery, and that to pay
the said fine together with the Costs arising, will be the ruin of his family—And four
Magistrates with a number of other respectable Inhabitants of the said County having
certified the truth of the facts, and his low Circumstances, the Board in consideration of his
poverty do direct that of the above fine the Sum of fifteen pounds be remitted.
