Commission issued to George Purnell elected Sheriff of Worcester County.
Summonses issued to Henry Hendley Chapman, Caleb Hawkins, William Hanson
McPherson, Francis Digges, Richard Tubman and James Brown to testify on the Hearing,
before the Governor and Council on Monday the 24th. of this instant, October, of the complaint
of Charles Mankin, Benjamin Cawood and William Brawner, that the Election for Sheriffs of
Charles County was not made fairly and freely agreeably to the Constitution and Form of
Government.
Edward Downes appointed an Associate Justice of Queen Anns County in the room of
James Hollyday resigned and
Commission issued to Edward Downes and Edward Harris Associate Justices of the said
County.
In Council October 17. 1791
Christopher Cole of Baltimore County by his Petition represents that at January Term
1787 he was fined by the Court [p. 343] of the said County the sum of twelve pounds
Current Money for Assaulting a certain Jonas Jones of said County, That he was compelled to
make the Assault owing to the abuse offered to him by the said Jones, that he is in very
indigent Circumstances and has a large Family to support from his own labour and industry,
and three of the Justices of the said Court having recommended the Petitioner to the Clemency
of the Governor and Council, They do therefore order and direct that ten pounds of the above
recited fine be remitted upon the Costs being paid.
In Council October 17th. 1791
Thomas Edwards of Saint Marys County by his Petition to this Board sets forth, that at
May term 1789 James Chappelear was fined by the Court of the said County on two Present-
ments the Sum of forty pounds, as appears by the Certificate of the Clerk of the said County and
that he said Edwards became Security for the payment of the aforesaid sum of forty pounds, and
all Costs arising thereon, that he was induced to enter into the Securityship from motives of
friendship, that the said Chappelear has left this State and that he the said Thomas Edwards
is now liable for the aforesaid Sum and Costs. It appearing to the Board that the aforesaid
Thomas Edwards was influenced by motives of Humanity and that he is very poor and would
be much distressed by being compelled to pay the said fines, And three of the Justices of the said
Court having recommended him to the Board, Ordered that the aforesaid fines of Forty pounds
be remitted upon all the Costs accruing thereon being paid.
The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.
