Wednesday 8th. April 1789

The Council met.

Present His Excellency John Eager Howard Esquire

The Honorable John Brice

John Davidson

John Kilty Esquires

Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to Samuel Maffett Ten pounds, two
shillings and six pence Current Money due him per Account passed by the Auditor General.

That the said Treasurer pay to Thomas Smyth six hundred and seventeen pounds, ten
shillings and eleven pence, specie agreeably to the "Act to adjust the Debts due from this
State" per Account examined and passed by the Auditor General, due the ist. September 1787.

In Council April 8th. 1789

John Cartwright Esquire Collector of taxes for St. Marys County having prayed the
indulgence which by an Act of Assembly passed at their last Session entitled "An Act to
empower the Governor and Council to compound with the discoverers of british property,
and for other purposes," this Board is authorized to grant on certain Conditions, which
Conditions the said John Cartwright has complied with, and the Board being of opinion
that he has used his best endeavors to discharge the balance he owes the State. Resolved
that all Proceedings at Law against the said John Cartwright or his Securities for the balance
due from him to the State for the taxes in St. Marys County aforesaid in the year 1786
be Suspended for three Months from [p. 58] the twelth of March last.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.

Thursday 9th. April 1789

The Council met.
Present as on Yesterday.

In Council April 9th. 1789

Jane Tate of Baltimore town by her Petition, sets forth, that she hath been presented
to the Court of Oyer and Terminer for Baltimore County, and fined six hundred pounds of
Tobacco, and thirty shillings, for selling liquors without licence, that Cyder was the only
liquor sold, and She was ignorant that it was necessary to take out licence for that purpose,
that she is a widow in very indigent Circumstances with five small Children, and prays a
Remission of said fine; and three of the Justices of the said Court having recommended her
to the attention of the Board as a Person who they believe has a family of Children and is
very poor, Ordered that the said fine of six hundred pounds of Tobacco and thirty shillings
be and the same is hereby remitted.
