Tuesday 18th. October 1785

The Council met.

Present as on Yesterday.
The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning 11 o'clock.

Wednesday 19th. October 1785

The Council met.

Present His Excellency William Paca Esquire.

The Honorable

Charles Wallace, Aquila Paca, John Davidson and Samuel T.
Wright Esquires.

Commission issued to Daniel Powell Cox elected Sheriff of Talbot
County.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning 11 o'clock.

Thursday 20 October 1785

The Council met.

Present as on Yesterday.

A Petition from Samuel Fowler of Anne Arundel County was laid
before the Board Setting forth that he was appointed Overseer of the
Road that leads by Capt. Baldwins Tavern, and that he was presented
by John Aston at August Court last and fined five hundred pounds
of Tobacco for not keeping the said Road in repair, he also sets forth
that he was afflicted with sickness about the time that the Road was
said to have wanted repairing, that he was ignorant of it and that it
was not owing to any Neglect of Duty but to the bad state of health,
that he is a poor Man with several Children and cannot pay the fine
without selling some of his Provisions which would greatly Distress
himself and Family, three of [p 67] the Justices having
signed his Petition and many respectable Inhabitants certifying to
the truth of what he has set forth This Board took the same into
Consideration and were of opinion that the said fine ought to be
remitted and did order and direct a Remission accordingly.
