318 Journal of the State Council, 1784-1789.

James Meager and Mark H. Irvine formerly Subjects of the King
of Great Britain appeared before the Board and voluntarily made,
repeated and subscribed a Declaration of their belief in the Christian
[p 21 ] Religion, and also took, repeated and subscribed the Oath
prescribed by the "Act for Naturalization" wherefore they are
now become Subjects of this State.

The Council adjourned 'till Monday Morning.

Monday 12th. January 1789

The Council met.

Present as on Saturday.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.

Tuesday 13th. January 1789

The Honorable James Brice and

John Davidson Esquires attended.

Wednesday 14th. January 1789

The Council met.

Present his Excellency John Eager Howard Esquire.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.

It appears by the Petition of John Buckey of Frederick County,
that he living on a public Road and Travellers frequently calling at
his house which became burthensome to him, from necessity was
constrained to apply for [p 22] and did obtain a licence at
August Court seventeen hundred and eighty six to keep a tavern,
that he being wholly unacquainted with what further was necessary
to be done, and always confined at home at work (without the least
