Journal of the State Council, 1784-1789. 305

A Letter of the 24th. November last from Mr. Samuel Sterett
Attorney for Nicholas and Jacob Vanstaphorst Merchants in Amster-
dam, respecting the Loan negotiated by them in Holland for this
State, was read.

Ordered that the Western Shore Treasurer pay to Francis Croskey
two pounds, five shillings and six pence for the like sum paid by
Patrick McGrill of Harford County, deceased, on a Warrant of
Resurvey obtained out of the Land Office to affect Land reserved by
the late Lord Proprietary.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.

Friday 5th. December 1788

The Council met.

Present His Excellency John Eager Howard Esquire.
The Honorable James Brice

John Davidson

Josias Carvel Hall

John Kilty Esquires.

The Justices of the Peace and Orphans Court for St. Mary's
County are re-appointed.

A Letter of the 4th. instant from Joseph Chapline of Washington
County, complaining of the incompetency of the Surveyor of said
County, to make certain Surveys, was read, and a Letter written to
the Surveyor upon the Subject.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.

Saturday 6th. December 1788

The Council met.

Present as on Yesterday.

The Letter from Mr. Samuel Sterett, which was read the 4th.
instant, sent to the General Assembly by the Hon'ble. John Davidson
Esquire.

The Petition of Thomas Rose of Prince George's County, praying
a Remission of a fine imposed on him by the County Court of said
County, was read and ordered to lie for Consideration.
[p 6] Commissions issued to the following persons appointed
Justices of the Peace and Orphans Court:

Caroline County

Matthew Driver, Henry Dickinson, Philemon Downes, Zabdiel
Potter, Joseph Richardson, William Frazier, Peter Edmondson,
junr., John Stevens of John, John Hardcastle, Capt. Thomas Mason,
and John Brown, Justices of the Peace.
