In Council November 7th. 1788
Agreeably to the Resolution entered into on the 30th. October last
the Board met to enquire into the Election for Sheriffs in Frederick
County, when Peter Mantz Esquire, the Sheriff elect, delivered a
paper in the following words "I hereby release and quit claim to any
and all Objections to the Election for Sheriffs held at Fred'k. Town
the first Monday in October last Witness my Hand this 4th. day of
November 1788 John Ritchie." The Clerk likewise lays before the
Board a letter from Mr. Ritchie, desiring leave to withdraw his Peti-
tion and declaring himself ready to pay any Costs that may have
accrued. Whereupon it is ordered that the Petition of John Ritchie
be dismissed, and that the Clerk take the necessary steps to procure
the payment of Costs by Ritchie.
Commission issued to Peter Mantz elected Sheriff of Frederick
County. Ordered that the Western Shore Treasurer pay to John
Shaw sixty six pounds, seven shillings and eleven pence balance of
Account due him per Account passed by the Auditor General,
[p 367] Ordered that the Western Shore Treasurer pay to Peter
Engels Sixty pounds to enable him to repair Arms at Frederick
Town on Account.
In Council November 7th. 1788
John Basil Jarboe of Saint Mary's County by his Petition sets
forth, that he was presented for selling Liquor contrary to Law,
that at the time, he did not know that a licence was necessary, and
that he from a variety of unfortunate events is very much reduced
in the world. And Whereas it appears by a transcript from the Clerk
of the County aforesaid that the said John Basil Jarboe was presented
at March Court seventeen hundred and eighty six in two present-
ments for selling Liquor contrary to Law, and for want of the appear-
ance of the said John Basil Jarboe, John Cartwright the Sheriff of
the said County was amerced from Court to Court twelve pounds
Current Money the sum affixed by Law to the said Presentments,
This Board taking into Consideration the indigent Circumstances
of the Petitioner the fees he has to pay on the two presentments afore-
said and on the Suit against him and John Hawkins Hays on his
Bail Bond and the Recommendation of three of the Justices of the
said County do direct a Remission of ten pounds ten shillings of the
said twelve pounds which is hereby done.
