284 Journal of the State Council, 1784-1789.

Ordered that the Western Shore Treasurer pay to Thomas Jones
Esquire fifty pounds for one Quarter's Salary as one of the Judges
of the Court of Appeals due the 1st. instant.

[p 347] Ordered that the Western Shore Treasurer pay to Cob.
Uriah Forrest Thirty three pounds, fifteen shillings for three Months
half pay due him the first of this instant,

That the said Treasurer pay to Nathaniel Ramsey Esquire one
hundred and seventeen pounds, five shillings for his attendance as a
Delegate to Congress per Account passed by the Deputy Auditor.

In Council August 30th. 1788

John Mumma of Baltimore County by his Petition sets forth that
he and a certain James Watkins entered into recognizance in the
Month of April last in the sum of twenty pounds each for the appear-
ance of Benjamin Watkins at the next Criminal Court to answer a
charge of felony, which he believed him innocent of, that Benjamin
Watkins and James Watkins his other security have both absconded,
and although he pursued him to Virginia it has not been in his power
to come up with him, and the Criminal Court at their last term have
entered up Judgment against him for twenty pounds, which will
greatly distress him to pay, he being a poor man with a small family
to support. A number of respectable Inhabitants of Baltimore and
three of the Justices of the Criminal Court Represent him as an
honest man, and that they have no reason to suspect that he became
security with an intention to let him escape, and Recommend a
Remission of the forfeited Recognizance—in consideration of his
family and the aforesaid Recommendation the Board do order and
direct a Remission accordingly.

a Remission of the whole of the above
forfeited Recognizance

In Council August 30th. 1788

John Duff of Baltimore County by his Petition to this Board sets
forth that he hath been presented at the late Criminal Court for said
County, for Selling Liquor by the small without Licence, and fined
(as appears by a transcript, accompanying the said Petition) Six
pounds Current Money, that he has a Licence for selling Liquor by
retail, and the quantity sold, for which he was presented was half a
pint, sold in his absence by a hireling Girl of the Age of thirteen,
totally ignorant of the Law. He therefore prays a Remission of the
