236 Journal of the State Council, 1784-1789.
Thursday 3d. January 1788
The Council met.
Present as on Yesterday.
[p 287] The Petition of Patrick McEldery of Prince George's
County, praying to be relieved from a fine imposed on him by the
Court of the said County, for selling Liquors without licence, is
rejected.
In Council January 3d. 1788
Eleanor Nottingham of Charles County by her Petition sets forth,
that She was fined at the June Court for said County six hundred
pounds of Tobacco for selling Liquor without licence, and that the
offence was committed while she was absent from home, without
any intention on her part of offending against the Law—that She ex-
pected a permit had been obtained from John Dent Esqr. to enable
her to Sell Liquor 'till the meeting of the Court, but was disappointed,
and therefore prays a remission of the said fine—and three Mag-
istrates of the County having certified the facts set forth by her to be
true, and recommended her to the clemency of this Board. We have
thought proper to grant her Petition, and do order and direct a
remission of the said fine accordingly.

In Council January 3d. 1788
Lawson Speake of Charles County by his Petition sets forth that
he was fined by the Court of said County at September term 1787,
in the Sum of five pounds Current Money for keeping a ferry with-
out Licence, that he had made application to the Orphans Court at
their sitting preceeding the County Court aforesaid for a licence,
which they could not grant, but gave him a verbal permit to keep
ferry 'till the ensuing County Court, and that he was through lame-
ness unable to attend at the County Court for the purpose of procur-
ing a licence; all which allegations are by three Magistrates of the
said County certified to be true and a remission of the fine recom-
mended. The Board on consideration of the Case are of opinion that
the Petitioner should be relieved in part, and do accordingly direct
that two pounds, ten shillings of the said fine be remitted.
