Journal of the State Council, 1784-1789. 171

One pound and four pence due him per Account passed by the Audi-
tor General.

That the said Treasurer pay to William Wells Forty three pounds,
fifteen Shillings for One Quarters Salary as a Clerk to the Auditor
General ending the 1st. instant.

In Council February 6, 1787

A Petition from Samuel Smith of Worcester County was laid
before the Board setting forth, that through ignorance he was induced
to believe in Witchcraft, which belief drew him into a Riot, for which
he was charged before, and fined by the Court of the County afore-
said, in the Sum of Thirty pounds, for the payment of which and
incident charges, he is now confined in the Gaol of said County—
that he has a wife and several Children, and that having served in the
Army during the late War, he is in Circumstances too low to pay the
said fine. The facts set forth being countenanced by three of the
Magistrates of said County, who recommend a Remission of the
fine, the Board in Consideration of the low Circumstances of the
Petitioner, and the Expence and trouble he has already incurred,
do order and direct that Twenty eight pounds, ten shillings of the
fine be and is hereby remitted.
