The Honble1. Before you start, it is critical to determine whether or not the wall you are about to demolish is a load-bearing wall. If it is a load-bearing wall, you will need to find a way to make up for its supporting function, either by installing a header or another wall close by. A good rule of thumb is to remove a small portion of the wall and ceiling and see if there is a double top plate on the wall or if the joists above meet over the wall. Other methods of determination include taking note of the joist sizes above and their loads and consulting span tables (available at your local building department) to see if the joists need a bearing wall.
