No. 18 An Act Impowering the Justices of Frederick County to Levy on
the Taxable Inhabitants of said County a Quantity of Tobacco
for Building a Stone Wall around the Public Prison in said
County and for other purposes therein mentioned

Whereas it is represented to this present General Assembly that
the Public Prison in Frederick County is at present very insecure
and that frequent Escapes happen which might be prevented by
building a stone wall quite round the said Prison and a house at the
Gate thereof for the Goaler to Live in and that such yard would
contribute much to the Health of the Prisoners

Be it therefore Enacted By the Right Honourable the Lord Pro-
prietary by and with the Advice and Consent of his Lordships
Governor and the Upper and Lower Houses of Assembly and the
Authority of the same That it shall and may be Law full and the
Justices of Frederick County are hereby Authorized impowered and
required at November Adjourned Court to Levy on the Taxable
Inhabitants of the said County a Quantity not exceeding Thirty
thousand pounds of Tobacco exclusive of the Sheriffs Salary of
five p Centum for Collecting the same to be paid in such manner
as other publick and County Levies are now paid and discharged
for the building and compleating a good and Sufficient Stone Wall
around the said Prison and a house at the gate thereof for the Goaler
to live in of such dimensions as the said Justices shall in Court

direct And the said Justices are by this Act also impowered and
required at March or June Court next to Contract with some proper
person or persons for the undertaking and performing the work
aforesaid and to take a bond from such Contractor or undertaker
with good Security in a Sufficient penalty at the discretion of the
said Justices payable to the right Honourable the Lord Proprietary
Conditioned for the well and Sufficient Compleating and finishing
the said Work as aforesaid
