major part of them are hereby Authorised and impowered directed
and required to agree and contract with a Workman or Workmen
to undertake erect Build and in a Workmanlike manner compleat
and finish on the place where the present decayed Parish Church
now stands, a new Parish Church, to and for the Use of the Parish
aforesaid, and also in like manner to agree and Contract for the
Building of a Chapel of Ease for the said Parish on the Land of
M..r Thomas Reeder where a Certain John Knott of Saint Mary's
County formerly lived, And the said Rector Vestrymen and Church
Wardens or the major part of them are hereby enabled and impowered
to agree with and Purchase from the said Thomas Reeder one Acre
of the Land whereon John Knott formerly lived for the Purpose
of Building the said Chappel of Ease which said Acre of Land when
bought shall be and remain to and for the Use of the Parish aforesaid.

No. 6 An Act for the Benefit of the Poor And Encouragement of Industry
Whereas the making of Linnen Cloth of Flax and Hemp of the
growth of this Province would be of great Advantage to the In-
habitants thereof; to the end therefore that so Use full and Beneficial
a Work may be encouraged, it is prayed that it may be enacted

[Preamble]

And be it Enacted by the Right honourable the Lord Proprietary
by and with the advice and consent of his Lordships Governor and
the Upper and Lower Houses of Assembly and the Authority of the
same That at the November County Courts within this Province next
the end of this present session of Assembly And at every November
Court during the Continuance of this Act the Justices of each respec-
tive County shall Assess on the Taxable Inhabitants of each respec-
tive County the sum of Eight Thousand Pounds of Tobacco in the
same manner as the other County Charges are assessed together with
Six per Cent for the Sheriffs Salary to be paid to and collected and
Levied by the said Sheriffs in the same manner as County Levies

following, That is Say eleven hundred pounds of Tobacco to be paid
to the person who shall bring to August Court next ensuing on
Wednesday in the first Week thereof and to every August Court
afterwards during the Continuance of this Act on the same day and
Week thereof the best piece of Linnen Cloth of twenty five Yards
at least in length and one yard at least in breadth the sum of one
thousand pounds of Tobacco, to the person who shall bring the second
