of the Falsehood and Malice of it" And for this desirable End permit
us to observe that altho' Mr Ross is already allowed in the present
Journal of Accounts upwards of 139,000lb of Tobo in which is
included his Yearly Salary as Clk of the Upper House a Falsity has
been invented and propagated by malignant Shameless Men the only
Misrepresentation that we have heard of and which hath gained
Belief in the Credulous that M.r Ross has not any Allowance in the
Journal for public Services done by him as Clk of the Upper House
and that the present Dispute beT the two Houses is Whe.r he shall
be allowed his accustomed Salary as Clk of the Up.r Ho. or not; a
Report founded not only in Falsehood but equally in Folly from
the Facility with which it may be detected by those who are in the
least inquisitive
We are apprehensive notwithstanding a Committee of your House
went through a laborious Examination of the Account sent us and
hath made the meritorious Discovery of Omissions that Mr Ross's
Modesty would not suffer him to charge ag.t the Public many Parlars
in that Account were not within View when your Message was
formed which asserts "that the Services performed by the Clk of
the Council for which he has a Claim upon the Public are in no
Respect connected with the private Concerns of Lord Baltimore that
they are of a general Nature relative to the whole Community that
M.r Ross claims nothing but for Services done to the Public that Mr
Ross hath exhited an Account of Duties actually performed by him
in his Office of Clk and that it appears by his Account that if the
same Rule is admitted in charging the Public which is established by
the Inspection Law in Matters of private Concern the Expence of
the actual Services done by him for the public would considerably
exceed the Amount of the Salary" Can these be asserted or admitted
as incontrovertible Facts with any Degree of Candour? On the
contrary the Account itself which you have been pleased to send us
Amounting with the discovered Omissions to 102,743 1/2lb Tobo is
partly constituted of a Charge of 270.lb Tobo for recording an Indre
bet L.d Balt.re and Caecilius Calvert Esq.r of the One part and the
Hon.ble Tho.s Bennett and W.m Sharpe Esq: of the other p.t Settlem.t
of the Province of Maryland 30 Sides" against which is noted in
the Margin "Articles relating to Lord Balt.re Of sundry Charges
on Petitions of private psons to the Governor and Council and
Orders thereon in the Pet.rs Favour to the Amount of 526.lb Tobo
of 27000.lb of Tobo for 180 Inspectors Comisons being upon an
Average 20 Each Year at the Rate of 150.lb of Tobo for Each" In
the Acco.t of the late Clk 3600.lb of Tobo for "Inspectors Comisons
24 at 150.lb Tobo Each" In the Account of the present Clk 9600.lb
of Tobo for 150 Days Attendance of those Gent besides some few
trifling Charges for Parish Petitions And as to the Addition of
7,448.lb of Tobo made by the Committee of the Upper House as an
