Liber No. 36
Nov. 19

Gentlemen of the Upper house of Assembly
Having received Letters last night by Express from Captain
Shelley & other Persons who live in the Western Part of Frederick
County wherein they inform me that the Incursions of a Party of
Indians and some Mischief they have lately done at a Place called
the Cove either within or very near this Province have thrown our
Frontier Inhabitants into the greatest Consternation and that unless
an armed Force be Spedily sent to their relief there is great Reason
to believe Numbers of them would desert their Habitations and the
Frontier Settlement again become a Scene of Distress and Desola-
tion, I think it incumbent on me to recommend their unhappy Con-
dition to the Consideration of both you and the Gentlemen of the
Lower House of Assembly and am in hopes such Provision will be
made for their Relief and Protection as might encourage them to
remain on their Plantations and Secure them from the dreadful
Calamities they have at Present so much reason to apprehend
