Thursday, April 8, 1762.

The House met according to Adjournment: The Members were
called, and all appeared as Yesterday. The Proceedings were Read.
The House proceeds to the Reading the Bill for granting a Supply
of Forty-five Thousand Pounds for his Majesty's Service, &c. and
in Progression, the Question was put, Whether the yearly Tax on
Lawyers, Physicians, hired Clerks acting without Commission,
Factors, Agents, or Managers, Trading or using Commerce within
this Province, as such, shall Pay for Three Years successively, Eight-
pence or One Shilling, for every Twenty Shillings of the clear
annual Amount of their Profit. Resolved that they shall Pay
Eight-pence.

On Progression in Reading the Bill aforesaid, the Question was
put, That the following Clause be struck out, viz.

Provided always, That every Batchelor or Widower, not having
any Child or Children, whose Real and Personal Estate is not valued
to the Sum of One Hundred Pounds, shall be assessed the Sum of
Five Shillings, in Lieu of all Assessments to be made on his said
Real and Personal Estate, in Virtue of this Act. Resolved in the
Negative.
