[Council to General Smallwood.]

We are honored with yours of this Day. As the Act for raising
Recruits directs that 2O,000£ be put into your Hands for that Pur-
pose, we think you may, with great Propriety, dispose of Part of
this Money in the Purchase of the necessary Books and Papers, as,
doubtless, all your reasonable Expenditures are to be paid out of it.
There are three thousand Dollars of the Money detained by Mr
Steward, in the Hands of Col. Saml Smith which we will give you
an Order for, if you. think proper.

Saturday 16th February 1782

Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to James Brice one
hundred and three pounds, ten shillings — Gilbert Middleton seven
pounds fifteen shillings and three pence — and James Tootell fifty
eight pounds, seventeen shillings and eight pence of the Bills emitted
under the Act for the Emission of Bills of Credit &ca due them for
Certificates issued agreeable to the Act to adjust the Debts due from
this State. —
That the said Treasurer pay to Joshua Lackland nineteen pounds,
thirteen shillings and one penny of the same Emission to be delivered
over to John Bullen Collector of Stores for Ann Arundel County on
Account.
That the said Treasurer pay to Major John Swan of the 1st Regi-
ment of Light Dragoons, thirty pounds in lieu of a Suit of Cloaths
for the present Year on Account — fifty one pounds, twelve shillings
for Stores to the first of January on Account and twenty one pounds,
nine shillings of the same Emission per Account passed. —
That the said Treasurer pay to Marmaduke McCain, thirteen
pounds, eighteen shillings and four pence — William Pennington one
pound and four pence — Stephen McCay one pound, eight shillings
and eight pence and Simon Perry one pound, seven shillings and six
pence of the same Emission due them per Accounts passed. —

That the said Treasurer pay to Lieut Thomas Boyd of the 5th
Regiment thirty pounds of the same Emission on Account.
That Benjamin Griffith Commissary of Baltimore County deliver
to Benjamin Stoddert Esqr three hundred and thirty three bushels
of Wheat for a Quarters Salary. —
Francis Deakins of Montgomery County is appointed Examiner
General agreeable to the Directions of the " Act to appropriate cer-
tain Lands to the use of the Officers and Soldiers of this State; and
for the Sale of Vacant Lands " —
Marmaduke McCain a Substitute from Frederick County to serve
'till the 10th of December last, having served the term for which he
became a Substitute is Discharged. —
