[Wm Paca in Council to Wm Barrow Esqr Surveyor of
Dor County

The Examiner General being absent, not to return, as we under-
stand, for some considerable time — We are induced by the reasons
contained in your Letter to him of the 9th Ulto to alter in the present
instance only that part of our Instructions for the direction of Sur-
veyors in their Office, of the 15th of April 1782 which relates to the
Appointment of Assistants.— And instead of being governed by the
19th and 20th Articles of the said Instructions, We hereby Authorize
you to appoint Matthew Smith your Assistant, who shall be invested
with all the Power and Authority of an Assistant Surveyor, as if his
Appointment, and the Approbation of it had been in the usual man-
ner, he qualifying as directed in our said Instructions. —

[Wm Paca Annapolis to His Excellency General Washington]

I have been honored with your Excellency's Favor of March, and
am exceedingly obliged by your Excellencys attention to the Repre-
sentation I made of the Enemies Depredations on the Citizens of
this State. General Carleton has been so polite as to write to me two
several Letters on the Subject and assured me that Measures would
be taken for the prevention of the like Outrages : but the late general
Cessation of Hostilities has rendered the Steps unnecessary, On
which important Event I beg Leave to offer your Excellency my
warmest Congratulations.
I return your Excellency Thanks for your Polite Congratulation
on my Appointment to the Government of this State, and shall be
happy if by any Exertions in my Department I shall be able to con-
tribute to the general Interest and Welfare of the United States. —
With every Sentiment of Regard & Attachment &ca
