Whereas it appears by the Oath of John Smith Brookes made 20th
March last that he some time ago received an Order from the Gov-
ernor and Council on the Western shore Treasurer for thirty & some
odd thousand pounds of Tobacco, the exact quantity he could not
ascertain for Goods furnished them which said order was endorsed
and directed to the Collector, Thomas Williams for payment and
which said order is misplaced or lost and no part thereof paid And
Whereas it appears by the Proceedings of this Board that an Order
was given to the said John Smith Brookes on the 29th November 1781
for thirty two thousand and fifty one pounds and one quarter of a
pound of Tobacco for Goods purchased of him. This Board taking
into Consideration the case of the Said John Smith Brookes (the
said order not having been presented to the Treasurer for Payment
since it was lost or mislaid and the Honble John H Stone having en-
gaged to indemnify the State from the said Order) it is therefore
Ordered that the Treasurer of the western shore pay unto the said
John Smith Brookes the quantity of thirty two thousand and fifty
one pounds and one quarter of a pound of Tobacco including the four
per Cent. —
