Council of Maryland, 1781-1782. 283

forty pounds current Money for Fornication, that his Security at-
tended and tendered the Money for the Fine thereon but not being
able to discharge the Officers fees in specie the whole was delayed
until a future day and in consequence an Execution issued, a suffi-
cient number of the Magistrates from the said County having recom-
mended that the prayer of the Petition of the said Elisha Mumford
be granted — We do therefore order that the said forty pounds be re-
mitted the said Elisha Mumford and that no further proceedings
be had on the said forfeited recognizance on his the said Mumfords
paying the legal Fees. —

[Council to The Honble Intendant]

We have determined to make no Advances to Officers for Stores,
in Consequence of the Acts of Assembly on that Subject. The Reso-
lutions of Congress lately received, will shew the Propriety of this
Determination. You will please to give Directions to the Auditor
accordingly. We do not mean to comprehend the Officers on the
Recruiting Service, and those employed in disciplining the Troops,
their Accounts will be setled in the Mode lately adopted.

[Council to The Honble Intendant]

We request you will have purchased, sixty Blankets for the In-
valids, who are to be marched to Frederick Town, as a Guard for
the Prisoners there.

Ibid.

[Council to Honble Intendant]

We have Reason to believe the Debt due to Messrs Wallace, David-
son and Company, as Agents for Gentlemen in France, had Influence
with the Assembly in making the Application of £20,000 for the
Payment of Creditors; besides this, Mr Wallace had our Promise to
be paid long ago; it would therefore give us Satisfaction if you could
settle with him immediately. There is none of the Money appro-
priated for the Barges now in the Treasury, when it comes in, the
Money advanced on that Account, from the Sales of Specifics shall
be replaced.

Ibid.

Friday 11th October 1782

Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to Lieutt Thomas
Rowse twenty four pounds, seventeen shillings and six pence and
Ensign Henry Hawkins fourteen pounds, six shillings and six pence
specie out of the Money that came from the Havana, put into the
Treasury by Major General Smallwood, to be by them accounted
for and charged to the United States. —
