[Charles Hunger ford to the Governor and Council]

Worthy Sir This is to acquaint your Excellency, and your Hon-
ourable Council, that a Certain John Gaskin of Montgomery County,
was brought before me for speaking Inimical &c to the present Cause
of America, after hearing the Allegation of these Witnesss Isaac
Lewis, Katharine, his wife, and Ann Nesbet, Could do no other then
Commit him to the goal of his County.

[Deposition of Isaac Lewis Sworn before Charles Hungerford]

State of Maryland Augt 26th 1781 Came Isaac Lewis, before the
Montgomery County Subscriber one of the Justices of said County,
and made Oath on the holy Evangelist of Almighty God, that some
time last fall this deponant heard John Gaskin, say that he had Re-
ceived a letter from one old goff of Frederick Town his Country-
man, is son had sent him from New York, who was there with the
English, and asked the said Lewis to Inroll with him, and told him
he should have a patent for any peice of land he would Chose, this
deponents Reply to the said gaskin, what the Devil should I do with
a patent, the said gaskins answered, the said lewis, we can bore a hole
in the sleepers of the house or Sills, and put it in there, and who the
Devil can find it and Pluck it up, this deponant then asked the said
gaskins, who these Commissioners were, his answer was if he would
Inroll, he would let him know, the said lewis answered I will be
Damnd, if I do Inroll, this Deponant further sayeth not.

[Deposition of Katharine Lewis before Chas Hungerford,
Montgomery County]

Came Katharine Lewis, before the subscribers, one of the Justices
of said County, and made oath on the holy Evangelist of almighty
God, that some time in the first of the year, Eighty one, this De-
ponant says that John Gaskin, came over to her house, and Related
to her, and her husband, that at the time he was a Jailor in Frederick
Town, there was Two English officers sent to Frederick goal, and
that they Interceded with him, to Carry letters to their Wives in
Philadelphia, as they might procure means to Relieve their husbands,
and that they were scarce of money, and that he lent them all the
money he Could Raise and Render and they was Redeemed and went
to New York, and this deponant further sayeth, that the said gaskin
said they promised him he should have the money and fourfold Re-
turned him that he had lent them, and when they had got to New
York, they sent letters to him, and the money in fourfold and more,
and in the letters he received from them, that there was a house and
lot ready provided for him, when he pleased to come to it, this depo-
nant further sayeth that some time before this last Christmas, she
had been to one of her neighbours, and upon her return home, she
