called at the house of said gaskins and after a little Discourse he took
hold of her hand and kissed the back of it, and said this is my friends
Wife, Isaac Lewis, and told her there was no man in America, Could
hang him but him, and when she this Deponent Came home, the said
gaskins and his Wife Came with her, and he down with his knees to
her husband and Repeated the same words to him, this deponant
further not sayeth.

Letter 1

[Deposition of Ann Nesbet Sworn before Charles Hungerford]

State of Maryland Augt 29th 1781 Came Ann Nesbet before the
Montgomery County J Subscribers one of the Justices of said County
and made oath on the holy Evangelist of almighty God, that she
this deponant some time last spring was at the house of a Certain
Isaac Lewis, where John Gaskin came and said to Isaac Lewis, you
must goe to the battalion, and march from thence to george Town,
and the said gaskin, wished the English might get there before them,
and the said gaskin told his Wife, that no man Could hang him, but
Isaac Lewis — this deponant further sayeth not.

[Richd Barnes, Leod Town, to His Excellency Thos Sim Lee Esqr]

I have sent one of the Men you directed to Colo R. H. Lee,
the other two bid defiance to a party I sent after them with loaded
Guns. I have given further directions to have them apprehended, if
they can be found and to fire on them if they shuld refuse to be
takin. You have inclosed the names of all the Draughts and Sub-
stitutes with an Accot of the time the Substitutes were passed, which
I have been informed is necessary.

[Richard Curson, Baltimore, to His Excelly Thomas Sim Lee Esqr]

Mr Keeports having receiv'd some Thread, and rectified an Error :
I have taken the Liberty to transmit your Excellency my full account,
amounting to six hundred and Sixty seven Pounds, Specie.
These Goods are the Property of a Person late of St Eustatius;
who has been a Considerable Sufferer by the Capture of that Island,
and now pressing for Remittances of same.
I shall therefore much Esteem your Excellencys order for Pay-
ment; in Specie, foreign Bills, or if more agreeable an order on your
Collector here, at the passing Exchange: as p agreement you was
pleaStd to acquiese in, by your Letter of the 13th April
