the facts set fourth in the above petition
is the truth.

To his Excellency the Governor, and his Honourable Council of
the State of Maryland
The Petition of Greenbury Simpson of said County, and State,
most Humbly Sheweth — That your Petitioner being Drafted in
April Provided a Man in his stead during the War, at a Consider-
able Cost to himself, and being Drafted again in July and not being
Circumstanc'd to procure another Man, having an Aged and help-
less Mother, and three Sisters, whose dependance for the Neces-
saries of Life, are wholly depending on your Petitioner, which if
your Petitioner is taken away from them must come to great want :
Your Petitioner therefore Prays that his Excellency the Governor,
and his Honourable Council will take this the Deplorable and In-
digent case into Consideration, in which his Poor Aged Mother and
Sisters will be left in, except your Honours please to exempt your
Petitioner from the Draft, which as in Duty Bound your Petitioner
shall for ever Pray &c. &c.
The truth of which, is Attested by us the Subscribers.

Greenbury Simpson makes Oath that he was drafted in the 47th
Class under the Act to procure Recruits passed October sixteen 1781
and that he procured John Jordan to enlist for the War in his place
to whom he gave forty pounds part gold and part paper of the value
of Gold that he has a Mother sixty odd years of Age and three sisters
the eldest about 14 who has not been able to do any thing for two
years past the next to her about 12 and the youngest about 10 years
of Age who depend on his Labour only for Support.
