week. The Method he Took to Procure The Cloth he Purchased, was
he would Bargain with the Sellers & Inform Them That If They
Did not sell to him he would Inform me and I would Size Them by
which Means he Bot up all The Cloth fit for Soldiers. The Linnen
That is to be had is in the hands of The Property of Foreigners (and
cannot be had for New money) Excepting a Triffleing Quantity in
the Possession of Retailers which would Count but Triffleing to the
Proportion Wanting. I shall make up what Cloth Can be Procured
and send it Down To Morrow with The Arms but do not Think The
whole will aml to More Then 20 Blankets

Red Book
No. 30
Letter 69

[W. Smallwood, Annapolis, to Gov. Lee.]

There are ninety stand of Arms wanting to compleat the 3d Regi-
ment and six Hundred and fifty for the 4th with Accoutrements
which I have no way of obtaining without you wou'd be so obliging
to order all those sent from Philadelphia to Baltimore down to this
Station.
I think an Express had better go off this morning as Craft may be
got at Baltimore for the purpose more readily than here.
We shall want upwards of one hundred Blankets for the 3d and
one Hundred and fifty for the Continentals in the 4th which may
come by the same conveyance I wou'd recommend that the Field
Pieces lately brought to Baltimore also come down with their Am-
munition and apparatus. I have order'd the 3d Regt to march this
morning but if you think the arms can be got down this Evening or
early to morrow it will be better for the Troops to receive than have
them to Waggon to George Town

Letter 12

[Elie Williams, Elizth town, to the Gov. & Council.]

I have recieved and march'd part of the Washington County Quota
of Militia Recruits under the care of William Lewis & John Fisher
two of the number who are very careful young men it was out of my
power to get an Officer here to march them or Attend myself being
obliged to Attend Court, the number March'd is 48 the remaining
part of our Quota are raising in the upper part of the County which
from its remote Situation has prevented the Officers from having the
recruits ready to March at this time, they will be sent on with all
possible dispatch.
Arthur Boyes a recruit for during the War enlisted under the Act
to procure recruits is also sent.
I expect they will join a party in Frederick Town & will be there
put under the Command of a Commissioned Officer. I have inclosed
a list of Recruits Draughts & Vagrants & Enlistments & hope they
will all appear in good order.
