452 Letters to the Governor and Council

August 28

[T. Donnellan, Baltimore, to His Excellency Thos Sim Lee Esqr]

I send with this Letter, Michael Jones & Bennit Heard both
Substitutes to Receive your Excellencys Orders. Inclosed are their
Enlistments.
Being inform'd that some have gone of their own Accord to An-
napolis without my knowledge & joyn'd the Troops there, I inclose
your Excellency a list of the missing that enquiry may be made who
have gone in of them

[John Mills to Honourable The Governor & Council]

I being a draught of this county, obtained leave of Genl Smallwood
to return home to try to get a Substitute, but have not yet met with
one. I shall return to Anapolis as soon as I get well of boils which I
have been afflicted with, which disorders me, and am taking Phisick
at present, which occations me to overstay my Furlough tho hope to
be up in a short time, I am ready to take The Horses with me if your
Honours think proper to Give an Order to Mr Bond for them; pro-
vided that the General think Proper as I shall refer him to you with
regard to that or any Thing else, I offered to bring the Horses when
I brought The drafts but Bond would not deliver them at the Request
of Capt" Ford, without your order for them, therefore if your
honours think proper to give me an order for the Horses I can bring
them at Very little Expence There are several of the drafts of this
county that are Litering about and dont think of turning out, without
Any Reason or Excuse which people I should be glad to see Compeled
to their duty. I should be Glad that you would Think worth your
while to drop me a line by this oppertunity, to let me know which
regiment I am to Join, and when I am wanted, to appear, your Hon-
ours will please to appeal to Col Barneses letter by me, for my Recom-
mendation and many Dispatches from Captn Joseph Ford Comy of
Purchases for St. Marys, tho I shall take some Recommendations
with me as The General was kind Enough to direct me. I have noth-
ing worthy of relating only our Enemys Vessels left the River Patux-
ent on Sunday last, with three crafts, they Took, some of which I
am Enformed was loaded with Tobacco.

[W. Smallwood, Annapolis, to Governor Lee]

I am indebted to Colo Adams for Monies Advanced in furnish-
ing my Table with Provisions and Liquor to the amount of one
Hundred and Seventy nine Dollars which as he is now about to march
I am called upon to pay I therefore request that I may have an Order
for that Sum according to the Resolves of the Assembly.
