[H. Hollingsworth, Head of Elk, to His Excellency Thomas Sim
Lee in Council.]
And pleas your Excellency and Honors. Yours of the 19th was
yesterday Recd I observe the Contents and as I wrote you the 25th
that there was Little or no prospect of making Flower fit for Philada
or Foreign market of the meal I am (and have been Receiving) as
it was not intended for it originally, and is now the worse of being
kept too Long as tis mostly Stale and some of it a little Sour, and I
have Rec'd no wheat for a considerable time save a parcel from
Colo Dellam of which I wrote you of its being Wet, so as to render
it unfitt for flower for Mr Smith, of course unfitt for Mr Riddle, you
will observe by my Letter of the 25th that I have ordred the greatest
part of the wheat of the present Collection in the adjacent Countys
to be sent hear, soon after its arrival you shall have it in Flower of
any quallity that is wanted. I am this morning waited on by Mr
Morton assistant to Coll Blain with a Coppy of a Letter from Mr
Morris to the Colo on the subject of provisions, a Coppy of which is
inclosed by which you will observe a demand is made on us for three
Hundred Bbls Flower and as much salt provisions to be finish'd Im-
mediately, the Flower I can answer for as near that quantity is ready
at the post and adjacent Mills of Flower that will answer this purpose
though not fit for Philada or Foreign Market, the salt Provision is
not to be had hear, nor do I know of any save 18 Bbls Pork & one of
Beef Reported me yesterday, by Mr Jas. Sullivan, which provision
with Eighty Bbls Flower Lays at Choptank Bridge, which I am at a
Loss how to get remov'd hear, as I have neither money that will
pass or Credit but have ordered a small quantity of Flower to Philada
to be sold (if it will bare Inspection) to defray the Expence of several
necessary Expenditors hear, and if I suckseed in it so as to get the
money, shall be able to Execute this or any other order of a small
nature; tis Mr Mortons opinion with my own that Cattle must be
had to answer the place of salt provisions, Colo Blain wrights Mr
Calhoun on the Subject as dose Mr Morris your Excellency and
Honors, I therefore wait your Orders which I am impatient to Re-
ceive as the Service seems to require an Exertion
P. S. Shall be down with my Deliverys as soon as time will permitt
