[Jas. Calhoun, Baltimore, to the Council.] (Honoured by
Genl Gist)

In my letter to your Honble Board of the 11th Inst I mentioned my
having purchased near thirty Barrels of Pork during the late Alarm,
The bearer of this General Gist supplied me with fourteen Barrels
on that occasion for which he is yet unpaid Please pay him at the
rate of Nine pounds p Barrel which was the price I agreed to give
others. It was purely to serve the Public that the General let me have
the Pork at that time as it would have sold very readily for Specie
but he saw the necessity we were put to for Meat, and without this
supply it would have been impossible to have furnished the Militia
on their first coming in
General Gist has frequently applied to me for Spirits and other
necessaries which he certainly ought to be supplied with, but it is
out of my power to procure them for want of Cash I wish your
Honble Board would please point out some mode of having these
supplies procured him as I fear he blames me when it is certainly
no fault of mine for I would most chearfully purchase those things
for him was I able to pay for them

sheweth.
Whereas your Petitioner hath continued in the above mentioned
County, pursuant to the Order of your Excellency and Honors —
Your Petitioner now impelled by the Duty he owes to his distressed
Wife and Family, who are reduced to the most pitiable Circumstances
by Reason of his absence, requests your Excellency and Honors, that
he may be permitted to return to St. Mary's County where his Wife

gomery County.
This your Petitioner humbly presumes will be granted him, as he

tioner as in Duty bound will ever Pray.
