[W. Smallwood to Governor & Council]

The Bearer Sarah Wise complains of her Son's being enrolled in
the Militia before he was of proper Age and that he has been un-
justly draughted by the County Lt Colo J. Bealle who being subject
to the Civil and not the Military Jurisdiction she is referred to the
Governor & Council for Redress

[John Dockery Thompson, Head of Elk, to His Excellency,
Thomas Sim Lee, Esqr]

I recd a Letter from the President of the Council of the 15th Inst
mentioning that I was not Particular in my Description of the men
raised in this County under the Late Law — the recruits I mentioned
was those who Enrolled themselves to serve untill the 10th day of
Decemr next, in Consequence of the Act to raise two Battalions Mili-
tia &c — 'tho those men had Enrolled themselves since the classing
and have recd money from the Classes, yet it was understood they
were Entitled to the Bounty of Twenty Dollars, many of the People
of this County have advanced them money and have taken an order
on the recruiting Officers Appointed by the said Act — we had it not
in our Power to Enroll them before the 16th July the Law came late
to hand, and none of the Officers appointed had any money sent up
to recruit with — I would beg leave to mention that Cloathing come
within the same Discription of the Law — and should the Council
think the men not Entitled to the Twenty Dollars Bounty they can-
not be Entitled to their Cloathing which will render them totally use-
less in a very little time — Yesterday Leiut. Sears of Maryland Line
march'd from this with fifty two men he has their Enlistments &
Enrollments. I shall do everything in my Power to send forward
the remainder with a return of the whole. I shall thank you to send
me Commissions agreeable to the Inclosed List — they are much
wanted
You have Inclosed Captn Scott & his Officers Commission please
to Change the name from Willm Scott to John Scott —
