442 Letters to the Governor and Council

August 23

Received If it should be true that he has not Mr Campbell will Receive
and forward it to me I should be Glad to have Instructions what is
to be done with the Corn And wheat which I Received and Purchased
in the course of the Eight Months past it is much exposed to loss
by Rats Lying in the Stores there is not a Mill in my opinion in the
County fitting to Manufacture it into flour Mr Fords will do with
some Repairs which he talks of doing but then it cannot be done till
late in the fall

[William Hemsley Queen Anns County, to His Excelly Thos. Sim
Lee Esq.]

The Select Militia are draughted in this County, and you'll please
appoint the officers to command them as Several of the Militia offi-
cers are draughted.

In the late Draught for raising the two Regimts it fell on Mr

Joseph Gould a Single Man of small Property who has five Brothers
& Sisters to take care of, he also holds an Ensigns comm in the Mili-
tia. He has endeavored to procure a Substitute, but has not money or
wheat to command one, under these Circumstances I think he ought
to be excused from Marching, at least as a common Soldier. This
Draught has given great disgust to the officers, so that I much doubt
whether we have any Militia officers in future, if they are compelled
to do Duty as privates. The Man who keeps the Ferry at Kent Island
has declared he will put over no more Soldiers unless he is paid full
ferrage. Mr Beeton goes down with four Substitutes & one Draft
and the rest shall be got as soon as possible, but they are so dispersed
over the County that they are extremely difficult to collect especially
those who are unwilling to go.
I shou'd be much obliged to have your Directions with respect to
Mr Gould.
[PS] Genl Smallwood discharged a Draught from this County, &
his Aid Capt Jones has wrote me to send another man in his room —
this I conceive I have no power to do. The Fellow has emposed on the
Genl as he endeavored to do on me abt his being blind, but several
of the people who are well acquainted with him tell me since his dis-
charge that he can see very well — if I had not thought so I wou'd not
have sent him.
