[Richd Barnes, Leod Town, to His Excellency Thos Sim Lee Esqr]
Mr James Thomas an Officer in the Militia of the Coty that has
behaved himself in that station very well, was taken by the Enemys
Barges going to the head of the Bay and carryed to the Enemy
at Portsmouth. His Father Mr Wm Thomas is very desirous of
supplying him with some money, which he is much in want of, and
has applyed to me, to request your kind assistance to give him such
liberty as will enable him to do it. Which I shuld be oblidged to you
to do, as the young Gentlemans Father, and Family have conducted
themselves as Friends to our cause.

[James Murray, Thos Jones, Robert Ewing, Cambridge, to the
Governor and Council]
This will be handed you by Capt Matthias Travers who has the
Command of a Barge built by some Gentlemen of our County at
their own private Expence, he waits upon your Excellency &
Honors for a proper Commission to authorize her to cruize against
the Enemy or any others who might be legally captured. Least the
Publick should be induced to think the Promoters of this Barge have
acted from sinister motives, and to serve their own Ends by Cap-
tures & Reprizals, we can assure your Excelly & Honors we have
no such design. Equally indifferent to Censure or Applause, we have
steered that Course where the Non nobis — but Pro Patria, calls.
Whatever is made by the Barge (if they should be so fortunate as
to get any thing) we have agreed should be shared amongst those
brave Fellows who are venturing to revenge the many Injuries their
Fathers, Brothers or other relatives have lately suffered.
We are convinc'd that the laudable Motive of endeavouring to
bring to condign Punishment the Perpetrators of the many late vil-
lainous and horrid Barbarities weighs more in the Breasts of these
