accident, he was reduced so very low, for want of Raiment and
money, that he could not then return to his Usual place of abode.
That soon after this State's Boat the Plater coming up the Bay fell
in with your Petitioner and others his unhappy comrades, In conse-
quence of which at the solicitation of the Capt of said Boat, and
your petitioners incompetency to proceed on his return, he engaged to
serve in the plater for three months, at which period of Time he well
expected to be enabled to return to his desired place of residence.
But now, so it is, may it please your Excelly & Honour — That your
petitioner at the expiration of the said three months, was obliged to
tarry in this city for his pay, and discharge, the latter of which has
been and is now refused him, That during his stay here to receive the
reward of his services he has been by some means enrolled in the
Militia and as if Fate was determined to continue his troubles was
last Friday drafted as a Soldier.
Your Petitioners Attachment to his Country can be no better veri-
fied than by the general Adage " that the Tree is known by its Fruit."
Your petr therefore humbly prays that (the premises considered)
you will grant him such relief as the peculiar circumstances of his
case require and you shall deem just and meet

[John Smith Brookes, Upper Marlbro, to the Governor and Council.]
I have your favour by Mr Lansdale covering me £40 which sum
is by no means sufficient to answer the demands against me — and if
you can make it convenient I shall be much obliged for a further
supply.
The Quarter Marster of this place has applyed to me for provisions
for the support of the drafts which the Lieutenant of this County
has ordered to rendezvous here. I have no orders from you respecting
this business, and if I am to supply them it will be necessary that you
furnish me with money for that purpose. I have no salt provisions
on hand and their number will be too few to admit of killing fresh
at this warm season. No Bacon has been offered in payment of Taxes
and it will be very difficult to procure it at this day without the
money — beg you will favour me with a line upon this subject by the
return of Mr Landsdale
