can be procured. Capt Gale was taken out of bed a few nights past by
a person who call'd himself McMullen, who had under his command
four white men and nine negroes, and carried to Clay Island, where
he was most inhumanly whipt six lashes, and afterward hanged until
they thought him dead, but some time after he was let down & re-
coved. McMullen endeavoured but could not prevail on his crew to
hang him a second time (nor drownd him which he proposed) but
compeld him, to take an oath not to bear arms against the King and
dismissed him, Inclosed is a petition from Mr Sterling as I expect to
march the draughts to Annapolis in a few days request yr instructions
relative to his son as soon as convenient
