[Jas. Clayland Jun'r, Queen Anns County, to Gov. Lee]
I received your letter on 15th Instant bearing date 25th of June,
I am exceedingly sorry that it did not come to hand before as I am
persuaded the draught will cause a great disturbance and confusion
with the People of this County, and perhaps had I received your letter
in time cou'd have made the Draught gone much easier with them,
for I am satisfied men might have been got for 20 Dollars Bounty to
serve till the tenth of December next, provided the money had been
paid to them at the time of their inlisting. I am much obliged for the
Confidence you reposed in me and Still hope you entertain the same
oppinion of me as before, tho' I have inlisted no men. Nothing gives
me such pleasure and Satisfaction when I have it in my power to
render my Country service, and should be very glad to be thought of
at another time

recommended to the command of the Princess Ann battl he at present
holds no militia commission, having resigned A colonels commission
in Worcester, in consequence of his removal into this county, There
is not at present any field officer to that Battalion, but Majr Irving,
who requests that Mr Done may be appointed to the command of it,
I am well assured that his appointment will be Satisfactory. We have
raised a volunteer company of horse for thirty days. I am convinced
that they will if continued be very serviceable, without horse, it ap-
pears to me almost impossible to prevent the enemy Sacrificing a
number of our friends in this county, there has been repeated in-
