[Rt. F. Hooe, Alexandria, to Gov. Lee.]
By the latest intelligence the Marquis was at a Place called the
Wilderness abt 20 Miles from fredericksburgh, Genl Wayne had
join'd him & it is supposed he is between 5 & 6000 strong. The
Enemy was at Gouchland Court house & their light horse at Char-
lottesville — & the Governor Council & Assembly had but time to get
out of their way. The stores — Records &c. I believe had been moved
a little before. The light horse turn'd off from Charlottes Ville to-
wards the forks of James River where it is said our Principal Maga-
zine is — their main Army it is thought would move that way. I fear
the Baron Steuben who was with the stores will not be able to defend
or move them in time. The Militia turn out very cheerfully but — no
Arms. It is supposed the British have from 4 to 500 horse they
have been frequently 30 to 40 Miles from their Main Body. By the
latest accounts from Genl Green, wch comes thro the Marquis to
Genl Weeden he had Capturd 800 Privates & 50 Officers of Raw-
dens Army, and was in pursuit of the remainder.
