242 Letters to the Governor and Council

May 14

The bearer of this was furnishd a Horse upon the Credit of them
& I have to request your Excellencie that you will be so Kind as to
use your Influence to have the money paid him upon presentation as
I have given the strongest assurances of the faith & punctuality of
the Government over which you preside
This will be delivered too late to give the occurrences of the pres-
ent period If I can meet with a speedy opportunity I shall do myself
the pleasure of communicating them to you

[R. Stevens, Cambridge, to Gov. Lee.]

I have been Informed that you are in want of Vessels to go as
Flags of Truce to New York shou'd that be the case I have one now
at your Service, Lying in Great Choptank River which will Carry
about Two thousand Bushels, one of good Carracter and a good
Sailer, shoud such a Vessel meet your aprobation shall be glad to
know your terms and what you woud Chose to send in her, Mr Gus-
tavus Scott will be kind Enough to forward any Letter or answer
you may think proper to send on this Subject the Vessel Can be
Ready in a few days

[Wm. Klein, Calvert County to His Excellency Thomas Sim
Lee Esqr]

ImpresStd with sentiments of respect and influenced not only from
long knowing your friendly disposition to oblige when in your
power, but from my late heavy loss by the Enemy which oblig'd me
to leave my home & thrown me out of Business. I beg leave to solicit
your Excellencies friendship to the appointment of any place at the
Disposal of your Honble board which you may judge me capable

& worthy of executing: and shou'd it meet with your Exellencies

approbation I flatter myself I shall not disgrace it as you may rely I
shall make it my Study as it will be my Duty to pay the necessary
Attention an appointment in either the neighbouring Counties.
Annapolis or Baltimore Towns will suit me as I am at present
unsettled.
The above reasons I hope will induce your Excellency to excuse
this Intrusion.

[Willm. Fitzhugh, Calvert County, to Gov. Lee.] (pr favor of
Doctr Watts)

This will be handed to you by Doctr Watts, whom I beg leave to
recommend As an Assistant Surgeon to one of the Battalions of
This State. Doctr Watts is a Prudent & Valuable Young Man & I
doubt not will merrit the appointment He solicits, I shall therefore
be obliged to your Excellency for favoring His Application. I have
Inclosed a Letter from Doctr John Bond, who I believe is one of the
