The bearer Mr Wm Watts waits on you, to beg the favour of
a line to the Governor: He is desireous of enters into the service
of this State, as assistant Surgion, for wch place you may be assured
he is well Qualified, havg been with me four Years, is very diligent
& discreet. Mrs Bond joins me in Compts to yr self yr Lady & Family.

[Request of John Stewart to go to Great Britain]

John Stewarts Complts to John Winder & John Done Esqrs Re-
quests the favour of them to apply to the Genl Assembly of Maryland
for Permission for him to go to Great Britain, where he has Business
of Consequence to settle in the mercantile way & proposes to return to
Maryland in a year or two he proposes to take his son abl 7 years of
age wl him for his Education if permission is granted please to get
me a pasport or Flag to Portsmouth where I expect to get a passage
from.

[John Stewart, Somerset County, to Gov. Lee.]

Matters of very considerable consequence to me, renders it neces-
sary to make Application to your Excellency, for permission to go
to Scotland with liberty to return to my native Country when I shall
have compleated the business for which I solicit the leave. I hope I
may be permitted to pass thro' the Enemies lines either at Ports-
mouth or New York to obtain a passage in some british Ship. If
the Indulgence is granted me of going I beg to be indulged with tak-
ing with me my son, an Infant of about Seven years of age, who I
wish to leave there with a Relation, for the benefit of his Education —
for my character during the present dispute I refer you to any of the
Gentlemen from the County or any person who knows me

I have the Honor of requesting that your Excellency & Council
will Please to Direct the officers of the State whom it may regard
to Permit Messieurs Ridley & Pringle In whose hands his Majestys
stores in Maryland are at present reposited, to forward to this City
fifteen hundred Barrels of Biscuit, for the use of his Majesty's navy
