[Henry Lowes, Chatham to Geo. Dashiel Esq.]

I was at Collo Scotts this Evening when I mett with Cap. Lyons on
his Return from your house Coll. Scott Inform'd you had a Lettr
from Leigh Mastus Esqr to me which he sent that you had Orderd
Mr Mastus Sloop to be Brought up I shall now Agreable to the Dic-
tates of Humanity, Inform you off all I Know Relative to Mr Mastus
as his being brought up here wou'd be very Hurtfull to him — When
Last at Balt. Mr Mastus Informd he should by Permission of the
Govr Shortly come down Asked me in Compy where there were sev-
eral Gentn whether I coud furnish him with some Stock Cyder
Brandy & Vegatables for his Voyage to which I Replied in the Afer-
mitance. This is all I know abt the Matter, Coll Scott has Sent Cap
Joe Handy who is now here to bring up the Sloop, if an Affidavit
of mine to what I have said Above will Save Mr Mastus that Trouble
I shall be Happy.

April 20

[L. Masters, Hooper's Streets, to Coll. Lowes]

I yesterday set out to wait on you but from ye Sailors mistaking
ye Directions we were obliged to return & having a great cold before
& geting wet yesterday has made me so much out of order yt I did
not think it prudent to venture, wch I hope you'll excuse
Mr Lyon has been so good to wait on you for me. I have left wth
Mr Clarke 9.. 15..0 & Mr Lyon will pay you ye remainder in Cash &
you'll furnishing him with a Bill.
I shall be glad if youed Supply me with ye following 4 Sheep fat,
10 Galns of Peach Brandy, 10 Do Vinegar, 1 Bar Herrings, Pease
or Beans, 2 Busls, Corn 4 Barls, Carrots & Parsneps, Turneps 3 Barls,
Cyder abt 6 Barls, Onions 1 Busl, Lumber 1000ft

[Deposition of George Airs]

Somt Coty the 24th of Apl 1781. Came George Airs befor me the
Subscriber one of the Justices of the Peace for the County afsd and
made Oath on the holy Evangelist of Almighty God that on Friday
the 20th of Apl he hapned at Colo Scotts and Saw a Strange Boat
Going up the River upon which Colo Scott Desired some of the per-
sons present to Go out and hale her but she Got Two far up the
River and while he this deponent Ware Looking at her they put on
Shore about One hundred yard Above the Ware house with that
Cap' Jas. Bennett John Evans Samuel Handy and this deponent went
to where they were and Desired them to Call at Colo Scotts upon
which they did and Colo Scott demanded his papers and he Delivered
him Two Letters the Contents I Know not Mr Lyon Told Colo Scott
they Belonged to a flagg from Providence and was on there Return
but had Purchased several Articles from Mr Lowes at Baltimore and
