[Council to Colo. Philip Thomas.]

Lord Cornwallis being apprized of his ticklish and perilous situ-
ation appears to be meditating his Escape through Carolina and the
Marquis though much inferior in Numbers, is posting his Army in
the most advantageous Manner to prevent him, or if that can't be
effected, to check his Progress and harrass his Rear. This will serve
to shew the Marquis's situation and the Necessity of a Speedy and
powerful Reinforcement. The fourth Regiment, tho' not well
equip'd and furnished will march in the Morning and we expect they
will be in George Town next Friday Evening or Saturday Morning,
and have engaged that the Waggons shall meet them there. This
will induce you to exert yourself with unremitting Diligence to obtain
them in the Manner we have already requested, or by hire, if more
agreeable to the Owners. You will send four of the ten waggons
to George Town with what Stores you have procured. The Saddles
and Accoutrements for the Light Horse, you will forward in the
remaining six Waggons, to this Place. The Shoes we desired Mr
Edelin to purchase are to be sent to George Town and lodged with
Mr Beall Deputy Commissary. You will receive the State Prisoners
sent under Guard and have them secured and forwarded to Fort
Frederick
