Liber No. 78

appoint you one of the recruiting Officers for — County. You must
be sensible it is of the last Importance to prevent the Enemy from
penetrating our State which can only be effected by our sending a
respectable Force to the Succour of our neighbouring State of Vir-
ginia, and that added to the Inconveniences consequent on a Draught
will stimulate you to make every Effort to enlist before the 16th
July next what recruits can be procured in your County. The Money
to pay the Recruits their Bounty and to make you Compensation for
your Tramble, will be furnished as soon as possible. We have ap-
pointed — to receive and provide for the Recruits and have enclosed
a Copy of the Law.

No. 24

Tuesday 26th June 1781.

Ordered that the western shore Treasurer deliver to John Muir
Esqr one hundred hhds of Tobacco to be delivered over to Colo Samuel
Smith to be by him expended in the purchase of Cloathing for the
Army on Account.

June 26

Liber No. 78
P. 203

[Council to Colo. Samuel Smith.]
We have delivered one hundred Hogsheads of Tobacco to Mr Muir

according to your request. The Price of Tobacco in this State is so
much inferiour to what can be obtained in Philadelphia, that it is our
earnest Desire that what you have on Hand should be transported
to Philadelphia and sold, and the Net Proceeds invested there in such
Cloathing and military Stores as we have instructed you to procure.
We wish to be immediately informed what Cloathing you have pro-
cured under the late Act. The Collectors of Cloathing appointed in
the other Counties on the western shore have executed the Act, and
if you have not yet made any Purchases or Seizures we expect you
will not delay to do it.

Ibid

[Council Circular, Lieut of Somerset and Worcester Counties.]

Enclosed you have a warrant to apprehend certain Persons in your
County who we are well informed have been trading with the Enemy
and are dangerous to the State; we request you will have them
arrested immediately and sent to this Board under a proper Guard
with the Depositions of such Witnesses, as have any knowledge of
their trading with or receiving Protection from the Enemy.
