to receive and provide Quarters and Necessaries for such Recruits
as may be raised in Virtue of the said Act and the same to forward
to such Place as we may direct. We reposing great Confidence in your
Integrity and readiness to de every thing for the common Cause, have
appointed you to do the Duty required by the said Act in your County.

June 25
Liber No. 78

p. 2OI

[Council to Doct. Wiesenthall.]

It is absolutely necessary that the Detachment of continental
Troops now at this Place should be furnished with a regimental
Medicine Chest before they can march, which we request you will
immediately procure and have delivered to Colo Samuel Smith [ who]
will transmit it to us.

[Council to Colo. Samuel Smith.]

It is necessary the Officers of the Detachment which will march
from this Place in a Day or two should be furnished with a Hogshead

one hundred Pounds of Bohea Tea and one thousand Pounds of
Soap which you will procure immediately and forward with the
Cloathing and military Stores already collected to Mr Muir, you will
also get twenty four Drums and Fifes eight of which must be im-

we may not be well acquainted with the Characters that compose your

be so far governed by them as to countermand our Order, which is
founded in good Policy and necessary for the Safety of the State.
We are convinced it is our Duty and Interest to afford Virginia what
Aid we can, and none will be more acceptable and serviceable than
the respectable Corps of Horse under your Command, such a rein-
forcement will animate the Virginians, and the Army will acquire a
Consequence that will make them really formidable in the Eye of
the Enemy. We are not unmindful of the Situation of Baltimore,
and shall recall the Horse as soon as we have reason to believe an
Attack by a body of the Enemy is meditated against it.

p. 202

[Council circular to the recruiting Officers.]

The Confidence we repose in your patriotic and active Zeal in Sup-
port of the Independence and Liberties of America has induced us to
