[Council Circular to Lieuts of Charles, Prince Georges, Montgomery
and Frederick Counties.]

The Information we received a few Days past of a large Force of
the Enemy coming up Patowmack appears to have been without
sufficient Foundation. We therefore think it unnecessary at present
to keep the Militia at large on Duty and direct you to have them
dismissed.

Friday 15 June 1781.

In pursuance of the Resolution of the General Assembly of the 13th
June 1781. This Board took into Consideration the Cases of John
Hammond Cromwell and William Groves and after deliberating on
the Circumstances thereof are of opinion that their going at large
would be Dangerous to the State and therefore Order that John H.
Cromwell be confined to the District of Octarara Hundred in Cecil
County and William Groves to the District of Harford County not
to depart the Limits thereof without the Leave of the Governor and
Council for the time being first had and obtained and to be of good
behaviour in the mean time and that John Hammond Cromwell enter
into Bond with two good and Sufficient Securities in the Penalty of
three thousand pounds Specie and William Groves in the Penalty of
seven hundred and fifty pounds Specie to comply with the said order
and further that William Groves give Bond with one other good
Security in the penalty of one hundred pounds Specie that his son
William Groves Junr be of good behaviour and conduct himself as a
good and faithful Subject of this State during the present war be-
tween America and Great Britain.

Joseph Cross Lieut. Joseph Queen Ensign of a Company of Select
Militia raised in Prince Georges County and also to Henry Dickinson
appointed Captain Vincent Price Lieut and Charles Daffin Cornet of
a Troop of light Horse in Caroline County raised in Virtue of the
" Act to encourage the raising a Volunteer Troop of light Horse in
Baltimore Town and each County of this State "

Yours of the 13th Instant by Mr Turner is received, the Price of
the Goods quoted by you are much higher than those of the same
kind offered, and therefore we cannot purchase them on the Terms
proposed.
