[Jas. Calhoun, Baltimore, to Gov Lee]

Inclosed is a return of the Provisions purchased & received ;
by me in this County which is trifling indeed. Mr Smith & Mr :
Mathews hath been constant purchasers of flour since my appoint-
ment and had greatly the advantage over me by having it in their
power to advance the Millers considerable sums of Money to enable
them to purchase wheat by which means they engaged all their flour
whilst I was barely enabled to purchase out of the few waggons that
came in from the country none of whom will yet take the new Money
In my letter to vour Excellency of the 7th Inst I mentioned that
if there was any quantity of Beef to be bought at this place it was
high time to begin the purchase. I must again take the liberty of
reminding you that the Season will very soon be over for grass fed
cattle. I could contract for several parcels now but doubt my being
able to do it on the same terms after this week.
Mr Smith has about 1000 Barrels of very good Bread which he
would sell and I have spoke to several of the Continental officers who
all agree that the Soldiers would be very well satisfied with it, this
would afford an immediate supply if wanted

[Richd Dallam, Harford County to Gov Lee]

Sir I am informd that a Number of the Horses bought by
Mr Lee & Mr Wheeler are sent Back not being wanted at Elk & that
they are now at Public Expence As I shall have occation for One or
two Teams to haul flour & wheat. If your Excellency thinks proper
to give me an order for what Horses I may want I will fit up a Wag-
gon or two this I have thought will be a saving to the State as the
Horse while at worke will be but little more Expence then if Idle,
& therefore have thought Proper to mention it

[Thos Richardson, Georgetown to Gov Lee]

Sir Agreeable to your order of 6th Instant I now enclose you a
Return of the provisions I have obtaind since my appointment which
were all purchased, the smallness of the Quantity is owing to my not
being supply'd with a sufficient Qunty of money at first & since to the
dislike the People have to the money of the late emission, I hope the
Assembly will fall on some means to give it a Circulation, otherwise
