An Act for the Payment of a Sums of Money to Andrew Ramsey
Henry Maccaul and William Gordon of Glasgow in the Kingdom
of Great Britain Merchants.
Whereas it appears to this Assembly that in the Month of August
in the year One thousand Seven hundred and Twenty nine Two
hundred and Ninety Hogsheads of Tobacco belonging to the said
Andrew Ramsey Henry Maccaul and William Gordon of Glasgow
in the Kingdom of Great Britain Merchants were Shipt and put on
board the Ship Speedwell then lying in the District of Pocomoke for
the Maryland Duties whereof amounting to fifty Pounds fifteen
Shillings Bills of Exchange were drawn on the said Andrew Ram-
sey Henry Maccaul and William Gordon and were by them paid to or
for the use of his Lordship the Lord Proprietary And Whereas it
also appears that the said Ship some Short time after her departure
from this Province foundered at Sea and the whole Cargo therein
was lost whereby the said Andrew Ramsey Henry Maccaul and
William Gordon would have been Entituled by the Law then in
force imposing such Duty on all Tobacco to be exported to have
reshipt the like Quantity of Tobacco Duty free And Whereas by the
Expiration of the said Law the said Andrew Ramsey Henry Maccaul
and William Gordon had no opportunity of reshipping the like
Quantity of Tobacco Duty free nor have or could have or receive
any return or Satisfaction for the moneys so by them paid which
ought therefore to be repaid to them by the Publick which has been
eased of the Payment of the like Sum to his Lordship according to
the Contract then Subsisting between his Lordship and the Publick
Wherefore it is prayed it may be Enacted And be it Enacted by the
Right Honourable the Lord Proprietary by and with the Advice and
Consent of his Lordships Governour and the Upper and Lower
Houses of Assembly and the Authority of the same that it shall and
may be lawfull for the Treasurer of the Eastern Shore of this Prov-
ince and he is Authorized and directed to pay unto the said Andrew
Ramsey Henry Maccaul and William Gordon their Attorney Agents
or Order the Sum of fifty Pounds fifteen Shillings Sterling in Gold
or Silver making the usual Allowance of thirty three Pounds Six
shillings and Eight Pence per hundred between Sterling and Cur-
rency which payment shall be made and allowed by the said Treas-
